Happiness Comes in Small Pieces

I have found solace and pleasure in Lego building in the past number of years. In 2020, my husband and I planned date nights for each other for Christmas. A part of his planned evening for me was the “Friends” Lego set. This gift was inspired more by my love of the show than it was for doing Lego, but the activity was so satisfying. Since then, building Lego sets has become a joint activity that allows us to (mostly quietly) sit together, with a joint goal and the satisfaction of the intricate designs coming together.

Most sets take us several building sessions, ensuring we carve out some quality time together. We turn on some relaxing music and take turns building each step. We can essentially sit in silence together, enjoying the project. Building Lego together is particularly enjoyable in the Winter when our temperatures drop to -20°C and it’s snowing - it’s such a cozy activity.

I think I’ve always had a little nerdiness in me, and it’s only in adulthood that I feel I’ve embraced it (through Lego and other interests.) I have no qualms about displaying our projects around our home and my office, proud of the finished products.

Recently, I’ve been incredibly excited about the Lego Botanical collection. We’ve finished the Wildflower Bouquet, Orchid, Chrysanthemum and Plum Blossom. Next up is the Christmas Wreath that I am eager to begin.

I don’t know if I was just out of the loop before, but Lego has been releasing such works of art in recent years. I am consistently delighted and amazed by the genius of the new sets. In addition to the wreath, I am looking forward to our A-Frame Cabin and Milky Way Galaxy.  Mindfully creating time for connection and enjoyment with my husband and deriving such accomplishment from completing a Lego set has been a beautiful outcome of unabashedly leaning into this hobby. I am so thankful for it.
