Tiny Home Getaway
My husband and I have a bit of a fascination with tiny homes. We’ve watched dozens of videos and any television that showcases the lifestyle. I love the idea of living a simpler, more minimalistic life. We’ve concluded that we wouldn’t want to live in a tiny home full time, but have been anxious to try one out.
I came across a set of tiny homes in Fernie, BC, just a three-hour drive from us, available for rent. We were much in need of a small getaway, having had all of our 2020 plans cancelled due to COVID-19. This trip would be two birds, one stone; we get to test out a tiny home, and it would allow us a vacation that lent itself to easier social distancing and a better sense of control over our environment.
As soon as I walked in the tiny home door, I was thrilled; everything was adorable. The high ceilings and windows allowed for the space to feel open spacious. Little touches like the hooks on the stairs' railing were thoughtful additions that helped reduce clutter. The kitchen was fully stocked, including a gas range, small oven, coffee pot and medium-sized fridge. Overall, there wasn’t a lot of storage throughout the home, but considering these are generally short term rentals, this wasn’t an inconvenience. I was impressed by the bathroom was quite large (maybe bigger than my own master bath.)
The Queen sized bed was in a loft space, accessed by stairs. Cleverly, there were two small “landings” built into the stairs that allowed for some space to stand, great for getting dressed. I was able to comfortably sit on the bed without having to crouch, mind you, I am only 5’4” but my husband was also able to sit up in the bed to read or watch television. Additionally, there was a small outdoor deck attached, so I was able to enjoy the sun, fresh air and surrounding mountains.
This experience, though, was for me, more about well, the experience. I wanted to see how it would feel to be in a small space, with limited distractions and “things.” I felt incredibly cozy and content in the space; I felt like I was escaping from my usual routines and habits. I recognize that if I were to own a tiny home, chores and household duties would still exist, but as a small getaway, this was perfect. While the idea of a space with limited maintenance needs that naturally limits the purchase of unnecessary items is appealing, I still think as a full-time deal; this would be a bit too small for me.
This trip did a couple of things for me. First, it confirmed that living in a tiny home is not something I could do permanently. However, escaping to more limited space, that highlights the benefits of living minimally, is a helpful reminder of how I want my life to be lived and the type of home I desire. These few days also reminded me of the vital importance of small breaks for my well-being. The three days I spent away, removed from my usual routine, helped me rest and reset. Spending it in a tiny home that provided the convenience of my usual amenities but simplified in a way that allowed me to focus on relaxation and quality time both solo and with my husband has left me refreshed and reinvigorated.
