Creating a Sanctuary

This past year, the pandemic sent my husband and me into a bit of a renovation phase. We made some changes to our bedroom a while back and then recently decided to replace our carpet with flooring. This decision led to a small domino effect of other changes. Getting flooring meant adding a rug, which changed bedding, taking on a different colour palette than we previously had. We aimed for some relatively neutral colours that felt soothing and easy on the eye.

When decorating our homes, we tend to overlook our bedrooms since it's not a room that others don't regularly see. However, I spend a lot of time in my room, often cozying up to write, read or hang out with my husband. I prefer my bedroom to be uncluttered, clean and cozy. It's become a place that I want to invest in, making it a comfortable and relaxing sanctuary.

Of all the changes we've made, I do have some favourites. Our new flooring has made the room feel cleaner and brighter. We've added a record player, and many of our vinyls are relaxing, low-key music. By keeping our lights low and warm and having a stock of candles on rotation, we can create as Hygge of an atmosphere as possible. For me, the front runner is our chair from Wazo furniture that' we've used to create a little reading nook.

Whether it's winding down at the end of the day or snuggling back up in bed after breakfast for coffee and reading on a day off, our bedroom has become the place in our home we love to be. Recognizing that this room deserves attention despite being just for us has been a game-changer. It has led us to create an environment that sparks joy, creativity, contentment and well-being.
