Women Talking

I read this book several years ago and was reminded of it when I began seeing the trailer for the movie. I don’t think I realized this was based on a true story the first time I read it. The awareness of this and the knowledge that Toews grew up in a Mennonite community create a real gravity to the narrative. I found myself urging the women along, wanting a decision and action so badly. The end of the story left me hopeful but sad. I was rooting for the women to succeed in their plan but also felt the grief surrounding the decision. Toews always does an excellent job of capturing the complexity of people, and this was no exception.
